The Covid-19 Pandemic impacts on Indonesian destinations. The study case of Bali and Yogyakarta.

The articles published during the pandemic COVID-19 and recent period showed the vulnerability of destinations with economy based on tourism exclusive activity. Tourism is, therefore, claimed one of the most vulnerable sectors of the economy because it is especially sensitive to external shocks. However, the publications tended also to emphasise that the pandemic will bring a durable change favoring opportunities to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, including the goal for health and wellbeing.

We analysed the effects of the pandemic COVID-19, questioning if a conjunctural crises leads to structural changes, or not, focusing more especially on the Republic of Indonesia. We question if the Covid-19 Pandemic is favouring a structural change of tourism, integrating more Sustainable Development Goals, through the study case of two main tourism destinations of the archipelago: Bali and Yogyakarta, focusing on five touristic villages. Our objectives 1) to analyse the socio-economic effects of the crises during the Pandemic, questioning the vulnerability of the villages and the resistance of their stakeholders; 2) to examine the nowadays capacity of resilience of the local populations, including, or not, structural and sustainable changes. Our results demonstrate that the vulnerability of tourism should be qualified. The communities used the confinement, not to leave, but to rethink tourism, looking for modernisation, diversification of offers, but also creation of more sustainable models. Nonetheless, if the pandemic increases the awareness toward heath and sanitation, environmental issues are still mild growing in the villages.
