A public institution serving scientific, cultural and professional purposes, UBO’s primary goals are to contribute to the development of research and to raising the scientific, cultural and professional level of individuals and the nation they form, to regional and national growth, to economic development and the implementation of an employment policy. It also contributes to reducing social and cultural inequalities.
In terms of research, UBO has around 30 research units, half of which are affiliated with a scientific and technological public institution (French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), the French national institute for health and medical research (INSERM) and the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD)) and/or an industrial public institution (Ifremer), while some are associated with a university hospital. By focusing its research on four different areas – Sea, Human and Social Sciences, Digital Technology/Mathematics, Health/Agricultural studies – the university promotes interdisciplinary exchanges and the development of innovative research projects. With a definite emphasis on innovation and on delivering value, research at UBO focuses on topics that address the challenges of modern societies, such as health and sustainable development.
